Internal Blogs vs. External Blogs

January 5th, 2012

BloggingBlogging provides an easy way to keep customers up-to-date with your company’s latest news, not to mention to a great way to add new content, always a boon to SEO. However, do you go with a blog installed into your website or an external blog? Both kinds of blogs offer advantages and disadvantages, depending on your goals:

Internal Blog

PROS:

  • The best option for customization. Installing a blog into your website means that you have complete control over the look of your blog.
  • Built-in audience. With a blog installed into your website, you don’t have to point your current following to a new website.
  • No additional costs for hosting. No additional websites needed so, no additional costs for web hosting.
  • More professional looking. A blog hosted within your website appears more official to visitors.
  • Great for internal linking. A internal blog provides plenty of opportunities to link to pertinent pages of your website, a great, organic way to increase the ranking of these pages.

CONS:

  • Less content freedom. With a blog hosted on your website, you may be limited to the voice already established on your website.

External Blogs

PROS:

  • Separate blog, separate identity. Especially if you’re trying to reach a new audience, an external blog will give you more freedom to post content in a different voice from your website.
  • SEO benefits. Linking from a relevant, outside website to your company website can give your website a big boost.

CONS:

  • No built-in audience. With a new website, you’ll have to invest money, time and resources into attracting a new following.
  • Hosting expenses. Building a new blog means additional hosting fees, web design fees and more.
  • Limited customization. Depending on the platform you choose and the resources you have available to devote to the project, you may not be able to customize your blog as much as you would like.

Whether an internal blog or external blog is right for your business, CyberMark can help you set up a company blog and answer all of your blogging questions. Just contact us for a blogging consultation.

Good Web Content Makes Good Impressions

October 6th, 2011

Text on commercial websites is written for two audiences. It’s essential that web text is written in a way that will target search engines to get maximum exposure for your website.  However, when writing with Google, Yahoo! and Bing in mind, it’s important not to forget that potential customers – actual humans – who are directed to your website by the search engines will be reading the same text.

No matter how polished and professional your website may look because of well-executed graphics and high-resolution pictures or video, the quality of the written copy will also play a part in creating customer perceptions of your company. Poorly written text sends the wrong signal to your visitors, and may non-verbally undermine the very message the text is meant to convey verbally. Promises of reliable products and services will be contradicted by sloppy writing that’s ridden with typographical errors and poor grammar.  Customers may assume, even if unconsciously, that the same sloppiness will naturally carry over into your company’s day-to-day business operations.

Being careful to avoid the most basic writing pitfalls will go a long way toward keeping your web text free of errors and your company’s online image correspondingly positive:

Misspellings – Spelling mistakes, especially multiple mistakes or recurring misspellings of the same word in a piece of web copy, are inexcusable. At a minimum, a spell-check program should be run on every piece of writing before it’s posted to a website.  That can prevent some of the most glaring and embarrassing errors. However, since spell-check programs themselves aren’t perfect, text always needs to be double-checked by a competent writer. In addition to looking bad, misspellings can actually work against SEO. A few bad spellers might type in a search for “Aruzona plumming services,” but not many.

Bad grammar – Grammar problems are trickier to eliminate than misspellings, and even less amenable to correction by computer programs. This is another writing problem that’s best prevented or corrected by a skilled human writer.

Improper punctuation – Just because punctuation marks are small doesn’t mean they’re trivial, or optional. Mixing up the variations of words like it’s and its or they’re and their can easily change the meaning of a sentence. The standards of writing for your company’s website should not be lowered to the standards of more casual electronic communication like texting.  Again, spell- and grammar-check programs won’t always pick up on these errors.

Improper (or unnecessary) capitalization – As one book on writing points out, “Our language is not German,” referring to the only Language in which good Writers start each Noun with a capital Letter. An even worse practice is capitalizing Every Important Word or Key Phrase, or piling on every available typographical device to Make Sure the Reader Knows THIS Is Important! Some creative rule-breaking may work in marketing and advertising writing, but it can also quickly turn a piece of writing into a visual mess.

QR Codes: Building Your Business with Barcodes

May 13th, 2011

You’ve probably noticed an influx of black and white boxes, appearing on everything from business cards and product packaging to billboards and temporary tattoos. These black-and-white boxes aren’t the latest designer emblem (at least not entirely); they are QR codes (short for quick-response codes), 2-D barcodes that can store a variety of data, including text, hyperlinks, videos and much more. Readable by a 2D barcode mobile app, QR codes are becoming all the rage in the smartphone era. In fact, in 2010 alone, mobile barcode scanning increased a whopping 1,600 percent. Allowing you to pack information in a scan-able code that can be posted almost anywhere, QR codes are a great way to connect your offline marketing with your online marketing.

Here are a few examples of how QR codes are being used in marketing:

  • Virtual Coupons – Add QR codes with special offers to your print ads, allowing customers to scan and click.
  • Website – Drive more traffic to your website by including a QR code in your print materials. A word to the wise: Make sure your website is mobile-friendly first.
  • Maps – Help customers find you more easily by including a scan-able map.
  • Ecommerce – Simplify online ordering by adding QR codes to your menu or catalog.
  • Promotions – Promote your business by loading your marketing materials in small, easy transportable QR codes.

So, where can you generate these QR codes? Creating a QR code is quick, simple and, generally, free. There are numerous websites out there that allow you to generate custom QR codes, including QReate, BeQRious and Delivr. To create codes, simply input your code type (text, URL, video, RSS feed, etc.) and your content type, then customize the look of your code (black and white is just one look – many generators offer a wide variety of colors and designs to choose from). Then, download your code and add it wherever you want to promote your business. However, beforehand, make sure to test the scan-ability of your codes. Certain types of lighting, shadows and surfaces can affect the scan-ability of QR codes.

To analyze the effectiveness of your QR codes, there are several tracking and management services to choose from. While some are fairly simple, offering just number of scans, others offer more sophisticated data such as demographics, geolocation and more.

With QR codes, you can extend your digital promotions much further than just the web. If you are interested in adding QR codes to your marketing, CyberMark can help. We can help you come up with smart marketing campaigns that utilize mobile barcode scanning – Just ask us how!

SEOMoz concluded from studying the top 30 websites in Google Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) that there is a direct relation between link metrics and various social metrics leading to higher rankings with the search engines.

  • Number of Facebook comments – how many Facebook comments your web content shared on Facebook receives.

CyberMark Named 2011 Arizona BBB Business Ethics Award Finalist

April 29th, 2011

CyberMark International, an Internet marketing firm specializing in search engine optimization, has been selected as a finalist for the 2011 Business Ethics Award by the Arizona Better Business Bureau. This is CyberMark’s fifth year as a nominee and third consecutive year as a finalist for the award.

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the Business Ethics Awards, which the BBB Foundation established in 2002 to honor businesses that demonstrate a strong dedication to ethics and trust. The BBB Business Ethics Award winners will be announced May 26th at a ceremony at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa.

“I’m very honored that CyberMark has been selected as a finalist for this award, especially three years in a row,” says CyberMark founder and CEO Kimberly Judd-Pennie. “In our more than 15 years in the search industry, we’ve always been deeply committed to running our business ethically and honestly.”

CyberMark International specializes in search engine optimization (SEO), the practice of improving the online visibility of organizations and brands through organic methods such as keyword integration and strategic linking rather than with paid advertising. CyberMark also offers a wide range of Internet marketing services including pay-per-click advertising, social media marketing and web design and development.

Judd-Pennie says that it’s becoming more and more important for businesses to have a strong online presence in order to compete effectively in the marketplace. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation out there about how to achieve and, perhaps more importantly, maintain top search rankings. Going with a quick SEO fix can achieve great results initially but can often lead to harsh penalties down the line.

“We educate our customers about how SEO works and are straightforward about the results they should expect,” says Judd-Pennie. “Moreover, we only sell our customers services they need.”

In 2010, CyberMark was named a semi-finalist for the Spirit of Enterprise Awards, which recognizes Arizona businesses for excellence in entrepreneurship. CyberMark also donates its Internet Marketing services to local and national charitable organizations, including Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Arizona, Dreams Do Come True and North Ridge Community Church.

The Benefits of Pay-Per-Click Advertising

February 15th, 2011

Pay-per-click advertising or PPC is an advantageous form of Internet marketing.Looking for a quick solution to increasing web traffic and increasing visibility locally and nationally? Consider launching a pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaign. Especially when used in conjunction with organic SEO, an effective PPC campaign can help boost your online profile almost immediately. In addition to these benefits, here are a few reasons to consider adding a PPC ad campaign to your Internet marketing:

  • Level playing field – You don’t have to be big business to hold your own against one in the PPC world. With a smart PPC campaign, small companies have just as much chance to attract customers as big companies.
  • Low set-up cost – Typically, the cost of setting up a PPC ad campaign is very low, including creating the campaign and installing phone and form tracking codes to analyze your conversions.
  • Easy to control spending – With PPC, your cost depends on how many people click on your ad. You can tailor your campaign budget to fit your sales goals, helping you to control your spending.
  • Great for local businesses – A well-targeted PPC ad campaign that includes regional terms can help you bring in more area customers.
  • Easy to track and adjust – With PPC analytics programs like Google Analytics, you can easily see how well (or not so well) your PPC ads are faring in real time and make instant adjustments as needed. CyberMark can track sales if you’re an ecommerce site, number of phone calls (these calls can be recorded to help better train your sales staff), as well as contact forms.
  • Helps with keyword targeting – Because PPC ad campaigns tell you instantly which keyword phrases work and don’t work for your business, it can definitely help with your overall keyword plan. PPC is the only way to know which keywords yield a conversion (phone call, sale or contact form being filled out), and which ones don’t. It takes three months to fine tune and dial in so eventually you only buy terms that make you money. Knowing your cost per conversion is absolutely essential to your Internet business success!

For more than a decade, CyberMark has specialized in researching, implementing and monitoring effective PPC ad campaigns. Our PPC advertising service can help your organization gain more exposure and attract new customers practically overnight. For more information about our PPC program, contact Lisa DeVoe at lisa@cybermark.com.

How a Website Redesign Can Increase Conversions

February 8th, 2011

So, your website traffic numbers are good, but for some reason, website visitors aren’t converting into increased sales for your business. The problem could be your web design. An outdated, confusing or otherwise poorly designed website can turn off potential customers. Here are a few ways you can make-over your website to increase web conversions:

Prominent Contact Features

Make sure you contact information is prominently displayed on your website, preferably on every web page. For best results, go big and bold with the design of your contact elements and place them in the top-right area of your website, where they’re most likely to be seen.

Photo Galleries

Photos and graphics help convey information about your products and services that text can’t. Adding images to your site can help encourage more customers to take action.

Videos

Videos, including welcome messages and how-to videos, allow you to demonstrate your products and services in an engaging way. With a great welcome video or how-to video on your website, you can help convince more customers to try your products and services.

Live chat

Providing an easy way to contact your company is key to converting customers that might be on the fence. Adding a live chat feature to your website can help convert customers that don’t want to call up your company for more information, but wouldn’t mind a short, instant chat with a company representative.

To help you determine what web conversion elements will be most effective for your website, you can find out where customers are (and perhaps more importantly, aren’t) clicking to help diagnose problems with web design. Google Analytics users can use the Site Overlay tool to view where customers are (and aren’t) clicking. Also, sites like Crazy Egg and ClickTale use color-coded “heat maps” to show web traffic patterns.

CyberMark can also help identify problem areas of your website and offer solutions that will translate into more customers. Contact us today for a free web consultation.
